does anyone live in the UP that can tell me some good (and bad) things about it

UP?

I've been up there, but not in a while. There's lots of nature, porcupine mountains, some copper mines here and there, and it gets cold as hell in the winter

One of the gals here in the office lived there for a few years. Said it snowed. Alot. If I remember correctly she said folks that live in the upper peninsula are called "Upers", and those in the lower peninsula are "Trolls".

i live in lower michigan and alot of people down here think that there is alot of inbreeding in the u.p. because of the long cold winters and lack of anything to do.and the people up there dont seem to bright or in touch with reality so to speak. ive been there a few times to see the falls and such but once you get away from the tourist attractions it like deliverence reincarnated :evil_lol:

:irked: I'm a "Yooper". Born, raised, and still here. I am not inbred nor do I know anyone who is. I am in touch with reality and consider myself to be intelligent; I consider my family and friends to be also.

The tourist attractions are just that, they do not represent real people in the Upper Penisula anymore than the movie "Deliverance" represents people in the south.

Yes, there are areas of poverty up here, just like slums in Detroit or big cities. You cannot judge an entire population of people based on that. There are so called "red-necks" everywhere.

I live in michigan and go to the u.p. every year to hike the trails and camp for a couple weeks, and its safe to say I look forward to it every year. If I could find a well paying job there, I'd move there. If your an outdoors kinda person its the best. O and the fishing kicks ass.
