I know that this obviously going to range a lot, but when hunting is it primarily one shot one kill? and what do you do when you approach the animal after it is shot but still alive?
Some animals will usually be one shot one kill. that is what u should be aiming for. Not always though.
There are many ways to kill the animal if u dont the first time. Personally i feel u should shoot again.
Some people feel that slicing the throat is fine. After what happend to my friend's husband, I will NEVER do that.
He shot a deer way low. Massive buck. He got his buddys and they grabbed the tracking dogs and went after it, but they forgot thier rifles. So he had to slice its throat. It jumped on them the first time. It jumped the second time. the third time they surrounded it. when he went in to kill it, it charged him. The T1 of the massive 8 point stabbed him in the forearm, stabbing up near the wrist(about 1 in from wrist) and out right beside his elbow. he is lucky that it was as wide as it was or else it would have killed him.
My dad's friend also tryd to slice a deer's throat and the doe stood up and ran with him on its back. lol.
ps depending on animal, and weapon used u may not get a 1 shot 1 kill. I used to hunt very heavily with an air rifle(for squirrel) and it was uncommon for a 1 shot 1 kill. Also with doves i find 1 out of every 10 hits u end up with a non dead bird, with those u pop off the head.
With the squirrel, i plan on gettting back into hunting them with air rifle. I want to get a Gamo air rifle. They make one thats a .22, 1000 fps, not as good as some of the air rifles but it also has a small part that allows u to fire a bunch of small pellets like a shotgun. they work great!!
