Anyone interested in buying natives?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Iowa Darters, Banded Killifish, Hornyhead chubs, Black Bullhead, Brown Bullhead, Yellow Bullhead, Pumpkinseed Sunfish, Bluegills, Yellow Perch, Johnny Darters, Brook Stickleback, White Suckers, Fatheads, Brassy Minnow, Creek Chub, LMB.

Possible but very difficult: SMB, Northern Pike, Walleye, small Bowfin (I can get larger bowfin easily), carp, Crappie.

I'll let you know what I catch this spring. Those are just the fish I catch in my parents back yard, I will also be putting traps in the MN river and that will expand the species list.

Would anyone be interested in purchasing wild caught natives? I will be buying a permit anyway this year, so I will offer anything I don't keep for sale.

ewurm,

Make sure you are aware of all state (and federal) regulations regarding the capture and sale of native fish. Minnesota has some pretty strict laws regarding this and even tighter regulations concerning gamefish (sm/lm bass, sunfish, trout, walleye, etc). Only fish I can see that isn't tightly regulated appears to be smelt and if they are found in trout streams then no dipnets or seines are allowed. Also, there are pretty specific regulations about traps and leaving them unattended (can't do it). After reading the regs from up there, it makes me glad I live down south where things aren't as tightly controlled. Still cost us about $300 to get all the needed permits and licenses.

What about shipping without getting a profit? Like lets say he sent the fish to someone for just the cost of shipping and they in return shipped something back, like another fish. If that were the case he wouldn't be selling anything.

Let me state that I'm much more familiar with the rules in SC than I am those in MN but from what I've read in the MN regs online, gamefish can only be caught with hook and line unless raised and purchased from a fish hatchery, fish farm, or other licensed aquaculture facility.

Dustin and I both do volunteer work with the SCDNR, USF&WS, and US Park Service and have contacts pretty high up at all of those agencies and it still took us over 6 months of investigation and question asking to get everything in place to legally sell nongamefish and gamefish, both indegenous and nonindegenous. The rules involving the taking and sale of gamefish are very strict. I had to get an aquaculture permit and set-up several breeding facilities then have them inspected by the DNR. Several of these are simply leased farm ponds in the middle of cowpastures but they cannot have an incoming or outgoing creek or stream that would allow the escape of fish or disease (basically they have to be rainwater-fed holding ponds). As I mention before, we spent over $300 on permits and licenses not to mention the equipment to house, hold and breed fish.

So, if anybody says all you have to do is get one simple permit to be able to sell any kind of fish, they haven't investigated it fully and are probably, knowingly or unknowingly, breaking one or more regulations.

In MN you can catch them with a net if you have a permit and respect slot limits on the lake you are on.

Let me repeat this in case I wasn't clear....

"So, if anybody says all you have to do is get one simple permit to be able to sell any kind of fish, they haven't investigated it fully and are probably, knowingly or unknowingly, breaking one or more regulations."

pg 11 "Transporting Fish" clause 4
pg 13 clause 8

http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/permits/fishery/index.html (listing of available fishery permits)
Rough fish removal - does NOT allow for the sale of fish
Fish transport and stocking - Permits to transport and stock fish that are purchased from private hatcheries

http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/licenses/commercial/index.html?type=commercial

There are four types of aquaculture licenses available:
1) Aquatic farm;
2) Private fish hatchery with sales over $200.00.
3) Private fish hatchery with sales less than $200.00.
4) Aquarium facility. Fees vary depending on the activity. All applications must be aproved by the DNR section of fisheries before licenses are issued. Fee: $ various

Commercial netting of fish - Description:
A person must purchase a commercial netting license when netting fish from inland waters, Lake Superior, Lake Of The Woods, Rainey and Namakan lakes, the Mississippi and St. Croix rivers. Fees vary for body of water and gear used.
Fee: $ various

Minnow retail vehicle - Description:
A minnow retailer must obtain a minnow retailer's vehicle license for each motor vehicle used to transport more than 12 dozen minnows to the retailer's place of business. Fee: $ 15.00

So, to legally sell MINNOWS to an out of state buyer it would cost $? for a Commercial netting of fish permit, $700 for a resident Minnow dealer - exporting license, and $15 for a Minnow dealer vehicle license, for a minimum of $715 and that still does NOT allow for the sale of gamefish.

*Please note that all of the above information was gathered by myself online in less than 10 minutes from the MN DNR website and is easily found by anyone taking a little bit of time to do the research.

P.s. I hate being so picky but people not following regulations are how we lose what rights we currently have.
