Yes, Also Drunken Master 2 was great. I cant decide which I like more, the 1st or 2nd.
The Once Upon a Time films were exceptions for sure.I remember being really disappointed with the Iron Monkey sequel.
@ Boones Farm!oops my bad, it actually IS the same movie. Unfortunately for me the US version has 22 minutes cut out of the original HK release. Some people who have seen the movie already say the details were important. Up untill recently I didnt even realize Martin Scorsese was a part of this film. It opens friday, Ill prob check it out. Wonder if if theyll even bother dubbed HK version?
just saw The Grandmaster, my brother bought the dvd from chinatown. I didn't know this film was released in china in January already.
anyways, it had a great start. first half had me drawn in, then it fizzled out for me. got kind of boring and slightly turned soap-opera-ish. not sure if some will like it. I enjoyed it but it isn't anything that's gonna stand the test of time, jmo
the reason I am such a big fan of Jet Li's once upon a time in china films, is that he is action packed along with a strong philosophical context. this film was rich in philosophical context but lacked great fight scenes.
the fight scenes were good too, but I think it was more due to the director's talent and knowledge of the use of camera angles and cuts. jet li may have used a lot of wire fu, but along with the wire fu he has skills to do the martial arts
another thing i'd criticize is the building of certain characters that was lacking. they did great with the two lead roles, but I was disappointed in the lacking character build of "the razor" who was one of his real life students or his master's students (don't remember exactly) and the poor building of his wife in the movie. I had heard her role was supposed to be more concentrated on but it wasn't
she was beautiful though and I loved her small role. then she basically became non existent at one point
