Anyone keep a Fahaka with other fish?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If your going to do it, do it with cheap fish that you wont get attached to. That way if/when your fahaka turns you wont care as much

I bought 7 flametail tetra's when petsmart had a sale to put in with my fahaka. They were a dollar each so if they get eatin it wont cost me much

My Fahaka, (Vicious) is housed with 1 albino electric yellow cichlid and 1 rainbow shark. Both fish are active, and close to his size for now. I know that as he grows, they may become more and more of a target... but hoping not, even if I am prepared for that day. He nipped the cichlid's fin's twice, but even on days his meals are skipped they all three beg side by side at the top of the tank and he doesn't give them a second glance. Granted, these are not the only tank mates I have tried, as he has eaten a LOT of fish including plecos, rosies, tetras, gouramis, tetras, among other fish that I've tried introducing. If he eats these, I don't know that I'll even try any more - unless it's a large school of something cheap (like xrayjeeper has)...

check out my personal gallery and the fire eel lived with my fahaka no problems at all

I almost bought a baby fire eel for my fahaka's tank today but it looked too much like the worms I feed him.

Yeah, I couldn't afford a large one like that. These lil 3" ones were only $15. I suppose I could grow it out in my discus tank, until it started uprooting all the plants, like my last one at 24".

My personal opinion is don't waste your time trying to get it to live with tankmates. More often than not, the fahaka will rip the other fish to shreds. Although some people have had success doing it, fahakas are very unpredictable. If you do try it, just don't get too close to any of the fish you'd try it with.
