Anyone keep salamanders?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
That amphiuma is pretty awesome! How big do those bad boys get? I've never kept salamanders, only firebelly newts; I so loved watching the lil creepers though... I've been trying to restarin myself from getting more until we move into our own place. urgh.

If you go to backwaterreptiles.com you can see quite a selection of newts and salamanders. I have never bought from them so i'm not sure whether you should order from them, but it would be a good place to start. I would recommend amphiumas as a good species. They are super hardy, awesome looking, will eat pretty much anything that you give them, and can live in an entirely aquatic setup. I have kept fire-bellied newts, but they really don't do much. They are also incredibly stupid. One of the seven that I had killed itself by ramming its nose into the glass. The good thing about them is that they don't need too much space and will eat frozen/thawed blood-worms.
Hope this helps

I kept fire salamanders back in the day. They are great creatures. I was lucky enough to buy a gravid female who started dropping babies in the "pond" within her enclosure. I had the babies for 2 months but then they unfortunately died. I believe it was a water quality issue. I absolutely loved keeping her. Ended up giving her away when i moved and subsequently had issues keeping her cool enough. If i could do it again, i'd get a tiger.

There is one type of salamander I really want, the Californian arboreal salamander Aneides lugubris. I hope to have one some day, though I admit that I'm not looking very hard for one right now. It fits perfectly with my love of toothy predators.
