Anyone keep Sturgeons??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
they need a lot of room at minimum 3x their boddy

My 1,000 gallon tank (actually closer to 1,500 gal) is 20 feet long so hopefully that will last for awhile:)

Do you have any pics of that large tank or the sturgeon tank? I'm just trying to get ideasfor a new set up.

My 1,500 gallon aquaponic vat is somewhat unconventional and difficult to get good pictures of but here's one. The construction phase (over 10 years ago) which better shows the design was shot on 35mm film and I don't have digitals of it. In the photo you'll see a wood slatted walkway. The 20' x 4' x 3' deep concrete vat is below. To the right you can see part of my 125 gallon native fish tank and my 250 sturgeon tank (photo to follow). You can also see a short, concrete block retaining wall with a gravel bed behind it. Water/mulm from the bottom of the vat is pumped to the surface of the bed, percolates through and gravity flows back into the vat. The gravel bed is the biofilter and crops growing there remove nitrates. I feed the fish, the fish (poop) feed the plants, and I eat the plants and the fish. The only nutrient input is fish food.

And here's shot of my 250 gallon sturgeon tank. Nothing fancy, just a sand bottom, a few live plants and a large canister filter. The only thing special I do is about 50% water changes 2-3 times a week. I'm fortunate to have 55-60 degree spring water. The tank has an overflow and I just stick in a hose, turn it on and the overflow runs into my aquaponic gravel bed. Really simple and quick. No worries about spills.

The problem is actually not surviving high temps ( no problem for sturgeon) but that they need high temperature fluctuations to be healthy. This is why I only recommend sturgeon for outdoor ponds.
By the way,it's likely that your peacock bass out-compete him. Please check if he's getting enough food ;)

i keep 2 sterlets together with 1 jardini,1 african aro and 1 pleco...and they are doin great. water temp consistently at 30Celcius. Feeding them with frozen bloodworm and small pellet.

My sturgeon has grown "maybe" 1/4 inch in 6 months.

He is not a " bottom feeder"
He will eat from the water surface, tubifex worms stuck to the side of the tank, or anything on the bottom.
He swims constantly and uses every inch of the 150g tank.

I think he is the slowest growing fish in my tank.

Normally sturgeon are quick growers, given the right conditions in a large pond. 150g is just too small :)
