the vendor was selling at a very reasonable price. and these arent bad looking at all , at least better than fw atlantic rays, but of course these cant be compared to S.A rays, but at least you can sleep soundly without having nightmares of F&g breaking in and confiscate ur ray. only thing i really wanna know is if they do that sw-> fw ray -> pee to remain homeostasis or whatever-> high ammonia thing

how much is reasonable and i never really heard of the F&G breaking in anybody's house to confiscate any illegal to own pets except for the ones that got caught for smuggling them in the first place. I know there are many hobbists in CA that has S.A rays but of course they don't tell everybody but they are out there.

I DONT KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THEM BUT THEY LOOK NICE AND I LOOKED THEM UP AND SAYD THEY GET 40 CM

reasonable as in similar to SA ray's price ( not black rays )

very reasonable indeed, let me know if you get some. Also who's this vendor you're getting them off of?

i dont know if he actually still have em, or can get em? its east coast zoolgy (ecz / John) .... and im not getting it until i get rid of some stuff AND hav done enough research on it ...

In his thread he memntioned that they were being acclimated to fresh by his wholesalers in asia. Sounds just like atlantic rays to me, I could be wrong though.

As far as I know the asian whiprays are legitimately freshwater. I can't know for sure though, they may pull some BS on you like living only in fresh water but still pissing all over the place (as I suspect the Glyphis river sharks do).

As for the size... prepare for anything. The NOT GIANT freshwater whipray (Himantura dalyensis) only grows about 3ft across.... which is big but it's not the giant you see in the photos.
Again, prepare for anything. Someone who knows better will probably come along.

According to wiki, H. Krempfi could be the same species as H. Oxyrhyncha aka marbled whipray. If they are the same, then there is a lot more info out there about these whiprays.

In a quick summary, they are pure freshwater like the giant whiprays from mekong and chao phraya rivers. Their discus width is around 14" max. They are extremely rare. They are endangered. They are so rare most were caught by incidental catches. Only 5 specimens are found in museums. The Thai govt. has been trying to captive breed them but the program was halted in the 90s.

So....if you can get a pair and manage to bred them, you can repopulate the species from being endanged, not to mention a decent demand for these rare fish, especially in california, would make it a nitch market to be in the breeding business.
