I recently went to a pet store and noticed little mesh packets in their tanks so I asked the person running the place what they were. He told me that the contents of the packets absorb ammonia. Does anyone use these and how good are they?

I tink they are ALGONE packets. They used to advertise quite alot a few years ago. Used em myself in the filter, didn't impress me???

I've seen them before. I think it's some chemical called phospherus. I don't know if it works or not...I've just seen them around.

Purigen by seachem comes in small mesh bag i decided to try one out and it made the tank look insanely clear.

yeah seen them, didnt work very well.

However, I have used easybalance for months, it works much better, no water changes for upto 6 months, though i make it about 3-4 before the water looks tired.

never treat a problem with banaids a proplery cycled tank will take care of any ammonia if youre having issues with ammonia in a cycled system you either have a waste problem or too much food maybe a dead fish some where or the tanks not cleaned right also not enough filtration

I was just wondering what they are, I didn't get them and most likely won't need them.

Hmm, Maybe it was Green-X-

I put some in the bottom of my 15 gallon's gravel, it kills algea and makes the tank look nice for 2 months heh. I used it to kill off half of my HUGE hair algea problem, everyone knows small tanks are *****es and harder than big ones.
