I am looking to do this as I want the heater out of the tank for visual reasons. Is this doable? Anyone have any experience with this?

I have not done this with a canister filter but I did do this with a return pump. It worked well ,I do not still have it running.
You just have to insure that the heater remains in water, or you will at least have to remember to kill the heater when you do maintenance.

Kind of an expensive option but added mechanical filtration and space for plants like pothos never hurts hehe. Two small heaters on a controller too.
