Anyone mind helping me with my first setup?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Wow Rare you are a nooblette aren't you. You are very lucky my friend to have found this great community.

When I started, I killed manyy fish:cry::cry:, and still killing them now as we speak sometimes. You have found the right forum my friend and I hope you wont kill as many fish as I.

If you land your uncle's tank, that means more money for decor or fish. Great News!!! Please post photos, cause we love progress.

Good news! I got the tank, a very nice 33g tall tank. I'm pretty pumped because he let me have his filter along with it as well as pretty much everything else. At this rate the only things I need are a heater (His Busted), decorations, and fish.

Well congratulations! I remember when I was a n00b to fishkeeping, I had a betta and didn't even cycle the tank. :irked:

Congratulations buddy, glad you got the 33g,and agree with bomber,i wish i had this community when i first started, now just take your time and ask as many questions as you want.:headbang2
What kind of filter is it?

Aaaand wheres the pics:D:popcorn::popcorn:

Wow! That's great!

Well the issue is that I can take the pictures but have no way of uploading them, my usb cable is currently being borrowed. The filter is an expensive one from what he told me. Well, expensive when he bought it. Its the model 500 version of this:

http://www.petco.com/product/13594/...r:referralID=NA&GANTrackingID=petco_183436944

Which kind of worries me because that says for 30g tanks and this one is 33.

Edit: On and yeah, you guys are right. Thanks for all this help, If I hadn't found this site or had your guys help I'd be with a 20g with fish in it already.

I would recommend adding another filter. I like to have filters rated to about twice what the tank volume is. An Aquaclear 50 would be a good addition and allow you to keep a larger bioload in the tank

yes, 2 filters is a great idea! just in case one fails, u can also rotate maintenance between the two.

i would cycle the tank with pure ammonia, its quicker, cheaper and cleaner. compared to using food and other biodegradable things.

pure ammonia is ridiculously cheap, just look for it at store that sell cleaning supplies. i got a huge jug for $2.50 at the hardware store.

Just make sure there is only ammonia and water in the bottle. Some cleaning ammonias contain soaps and these wont work for cycling

I'd rather not have to go buy a secondary pump unless absolutely necessary. If I just put in 30g of water would that be ok?
