Hey all, ive been recently reintroduced to crabbing and i wanna try to start gettin more into it. anyone have any tips for saltwater crabs? Bait? I guess blue crab would be the kind to go for. I heard chicken is the best bait but in some places they say chicken harms the environment. Crabs are pretty much everywhere right?

take a ride to Great kills park with some crab nets and chicken necks.

chicken necks last a long time and wont be picked clean and breast and drumsticks just cost to much to be bait, also try fish heads.

What kind of crab do you catch? We get Dungeness and Red Rock Crabs here in Oregon, but I suppose most crabs aren't too picky.

I've used:

Salmon heads - Excellent bait but a favorite of Seals and Sea Lions, too. :(
Other fish carcasses - Almost as good of bait, Seals and Sea Lions can eat it.
Chicken - I save up all the backs, necks, giblets, wingtips, et cetera in freezer bags. To use the bait you zip-tie it into the pot and poke a bunch of holes in the bag. I've used whole, unplucked chickens, too.
Mink carcasses - Good bait but it smells terrible, a local favorite.
Bobcat - Dang thing ate 17 of my chickens before I got him...
