Black Nasty, Odo Cichlid, Haitian Cichlid etc. anyone on here own one??? or know someone who does???? please post pics and I have some questions about them????

I have read a lot about them on sites and everyone says there mean, although I don't trust internet sources because they say Oscars are mean and when I had kitten they were more mean then my 13" Tiger O. How mean are these guys??? I own red devils and Trimacs... so will these guys be nothing compared to them????? Does anyone have a breeding pair??? I dont want the pair I just want some fry...... any help on finding me some fry or adult Black Nasty's let me know PLEASE!!!!! I really want this fish

I would say rapps had fry but he must be out?. Polomax has at least one but I think has a pair. From what I know they'll be right up there with your trimac/rd

I'm pretty sure rapps has them.....cause I was gonna get them..last week..

He must have just ran out then because there's none on the stock list. Cubans but no Odo's..

I have a pair I got from rapps a while back probley close to a year now. I have never tryed to put them in with other fish they are in there own tank but they are not shy at all. Are you in Ontario california or Ontario canada if you are in california I can probley hook you up with some fry.

oh yah I forgot about that they are prone to bloat

they are prone to bloat, but imo bloat is not diet related. I've kept haitiensis twice. the first time I bought 4 from rapps and put the into an empty (but cycled, I moved all the existing fish out when the haits got here) 75 gallon that was not heavily decorated. I had an AC500 on the tank and kept the temp around 78. I fed them only spirulina flakes and they all died within 3-4 weeks.

the second time I got 3 from an lfs and put them into a 30 long with a few rosy barbs as dithers, several hiding places, 78 temp, an AC300 filter and a powerhead. I fed them everything under the sun from freeze dried blackworms, freeze dried krill, live blackworms, frozen bloodworms, and all different kinds of flakes and pellets. one grew at least twice as fast as the others and killed them. that guy got to around 4-5" when I had to move him to a 125 community where he died a couple of weeks later. he was never bullied in the 125 that I could tell, in fact he was quite the aggressor even to somewhat larger fish.

IMO, bloat in haitiensis comes from lack of oxygen in the water. they come from very fast flowing rivers in the wild so are used to very clean and very well oxygenated water. if this is not provided for them in the aquarium then they will bloat and die. this is true for some other riverine species as well such as several of the lesser common Thorichthys, istlanum, beani etc.

also, putting juvenile fish into a relatively large tank with no other fish in the tank imo causes them more harm than good. if the fish are still really small (2" or less) I would get as many juvies as possible and also get a big school of some cheap kind of dither than you can either move later on or allow to become feeders...your choice. but having some kind of dither swimming around in open water lets the juvie cichlids know there are no larger predators around. if there were a large predator around the school of dithers wouldn't be out swimming about in open water.

so, lots of hiding places, some dithers and lots of aeration and water changes and your haitiensis should be fine imo. :)
