Anyone seen this before?White stuff (not ick) on JD. Nothing in Stickies. Please help

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
true fungus is pretty uncommon on live fish so I'd go with it being bacterial. Either way though I would take the fish out and use a Q-tip to remove the white stuff and then treat the tissue underneith with a tincture of iodine. Being careful not to get any near the fills or eyes of course. This is a treatment we use on larger fish that develope bacterial infections and with good clean water it tends to help quite a bit.

Update:

I've been doing 50% water changes daily. Decided not to medicate at all to begin with (the iodine scared me, and I wasn't sure about other medications. I also dropped the tank temp to about 77 F.

A lot of the white stuff that was on the plants is now gone. I'd say about 90% reduction.

I'd also say about 90% reduction in the white stuff on the fish.

He's still not eating like he used to. He'll take about 2 medium pellets per day now if not just 1.

Hopefully the tank/fish continues to improve.

Also.....idk what it ever was.....But.....I seeded my new tank with a piece of driftwood that I had previously had in the tank where my sick fish is now. It immediately started growing TONS of the white stuff. Thing is, I remember it doing this when I first got it, boilded it, then put it in the tank. It then went away, but I've had it on the fake plants since. I think it all came from that wood. I removed it from the new tank, and set it outside to dry out, and it looks NASTY. White stuff all over it. I'm throwing it away. Luckily, it doesn't look like any of it got on anything in the new tank.

That white stuff on driftwood is harmless (and yes it looks REALLY bad), some fish will eat it tho, my BN pleco loved the stuff.

Yes. My BN Pleco was definitely eating it. I saw him doing it multiple times.

But the stuff did attach itself to my JD. No idea how. But it was for sure the same stuff.

And I still don't know what the heck it was. Couldn't be algae because it was clearish white.

Update:
So I've been doing 50percent water changes 2 out of every 3 days for a few weeks now.

All of the white stuff is now gone from all plants and from the fish!

He is no longer flashing trying to get that stuff off.

One weird thing did happen though. Once the white stuff started receding, there appeared some black spots where the white stuff was.

I kept up with lots of large water changes, though, and the black spots went away after another week or so. Fish is happy and healthy again, and I managed to keep him off of meds.
Best I can come up with is he had some sort of bacterial infection, which created an opportunity for that white stuff to attach itself to the weakened fish.

Anyway, super happy. Thanks for the help JFK!
