I noticed my male RTM hadn't eaten for a couple of days, and looked like he had a growth under his gills. So I decided to catch him for a closer look. To my horror what i thought was a growth looks and feels like bone. His head has come away from his body. There is no other damage to the fish at all. I've had this fish 18 months to 2 years and he's always been a beautiful healthy specimen.
Any thoughts.

That's a new one on me.It almost looks as if it has been jaw locking with another cichlid to the extent it's jaw was dislocated and bone pierced the skin.Is that a possibility?
Other than that never seen anything like it before.

He is the dominant fish in the tank, kept with a couple of females. He is boss and the females know it. Not seen them locking jaws.

Hi Andy, it almost sounds as if he is/was still alive? Is that so? How is that possible?

I'm sorry I cannot help you out.

Do you think he could of hit a rock or other decor at speed that caused the bone to poke through or does it look more like a growth.
Either way sorry for your loss he looks like a beautiful fish.

I can't see any other damage to the fish, doesn't look like he's hit a rock at speed. But who knows.

Yeah that's a first for me to. Unfortunately I think its time for clove oil the way your describing it.

That sucks... guessing you tried popping it back in?
