I know this is a perch but seems a bone hooks in at the lower jaw?

not sure, I would think trauma of some sort...
Not sure if it will be as simple as popping it back in but I would try personally. Could be just a dislocated jaw.

Wow, I have nothing other than good vibes to you and the fish.
I would try working it back in before putting to sleep. I had a similar thing happen to a lion fish - but on top vs bottom - being poisonous it was hard to do and I had to manipulate it a good bit to get it back in - the fish ended up recovering full - sorry and best of luck

Andy, I did some googling and I think that protrusion may be the hyoid bone. It may not fit into a "socket", but instead be held in place with ligaments and/or tendons?

It's really hard to say. The image I found appeared to be an X-ray of a Malawi eye-biter head so while the anatomy is probably similar it's not necessarily identical to a parachromis.

Whatever you decide I wish you the best and I hope you have another male in your fish house. I'm really excited to see how your harem set-up plays out over time and I hope this set back does not discourage you from pursuing that goal.

Thank you for that information, much appreciated.
Unfortunately that's my only male. I've grown him on from a 1inch to 1.5 inch juvenile. Think he's around 9 to 10 inch now. So I'm not to happy about it.

What a freak occurance. Motas aren't the fastest of growers either.
