I would try working it back in before putting to sleep. I had a similar thing happen to a lion fish - but on top vs bottom - being poisonous it was hard to do and I had to manipulate it a good bit to get it back in - the fish ended up recovering full - sorry and best of luckWow, I have nothing other than good vibes to you and the fish.

It's really hard to say. The image I found appeared to be an X-ray of a Malawi eye-biter head so while the anatomy is probably similar it's not necessarily identical to a parachromis.
Whatever you decide I wish you the best and I hope you have another male in your fish house. I'm really excited to see how your harem set-up plays out over time and I hope this set back does not discourage you from pursuing that goal.
