First thing, it's a perfectly normal tiger oscar and a nice looking one!

Second, never shop at that store because the manager is a moron. Tons of cichlids change colors due to there mood. I can't imagine how someone could work with aquarium fish for there living and tell you something so wrong.

Didn;t really wanna be mean.. But :iagree:

Not with teh never shop there.... Morons still get godd stock sometimes.... You never know what you might find for a couple bucks......

that guy should go sell second hand cars and forget about chilids.
give your o some live food and check how his colours change.i have 4 8-10" bad boys and there colour is always never the same.as soon as they see me coming they know it is feeding time and there colour changes and as said before all chiclids change there colours some might even change from yellow to pitch black in a matter of seconds.anyway that is a healthy cool looking tiger

This is a very valid point. Lots of bad pet store get some really good fish in from time to time. Just gotta know about the fish yourself and not depend on them for any information.

i have a red oscar that goes from jet black to a bright red and brown color, all the time he seems to go black when he is just swimming around, and turn red and brown when it is feeding time.

check out my signature as you can see he is black in that pic.

I agree with this post EXCEPT for the last sentence. I CAN imagine it because I run into buffoon employees who don't know anything about fish at fish stores all of the time.

I agree with you all on this and I will still be shopping there for the simple fact that they get some great fish and the prices are competitive. Also, the only other pet store local to me is a Petco which I think we all know is a graveyard for fish.

Thanks tho, I really was just looking for someone to reaffirm my belief that he was a normal O seeing as I never really heard of a hybrid O.

There are hybrids around, and some believe today's red tigers to be a A. Crassipinnis crossed with A. Ocellatus.

Since we're talking color-changing O's, my wild-caught pal from Peru is no exception, but his coloration seems to be a pretty stable black. Where you would find the lighter areas laced with red on a common O, he has only bronze speckling. This color distribution leaves him looking like an Egyptian decoration most of the time. His head does go green, though.

This is a Tiger Oscars. Their color varies. Do a Google Image Search on "tiger Oscar" to see some of the different striping patterns.
