Hi everyone, I'm aware that there's been a decent amount of specs that came into the hobby again within the last year or so. Has anyone been successful spawning them? I'm curious to find out any info on water temps, what ages/size do they pair out n spawn, tankmates, etc. pics, and videos are welcome too:) so far I've heard they're very aggressive towards each other and other fish. That they don't sexually mature until 18 months old. I was wondering since they come from brazil if it would be better to keep them at color temps?? Maybe mid to low 70's? I will be acquiring a sexed pair and a bunch of growouts to play around with, so I'm looking for anyone with long term expirience that might wanna shed some light onto us spectabilis noobs;) lol

Thank you, pretty much what I expected but I did follow up on the RO water which I've never looked into before. Definitely sounds interesting. I might look into setting one up on one tank and compare to another. The water I use seems exceptional compared to everyone else's. I'm not exactly sure why but I'm thinking due to the highly enriched soil and natural springs here might aid the water quality being what it is. So I'm not gonna complain about my water but just be thankful that I don't have to treat my water and still yield the results I do.

The reads don't mention water temp. Ill try to google the areas where they come from and see if I can get more info on their natural areas. Maybe ill try a biotope?? Also from the videos I searched on YouTube, the breeding pairs seem to be in community tanks and doing well. Maybe the typical tactic of keeping only pair and workin a divider might not be the preferred method to spawn?

There was an article in TFH about a brit that bred two different pairs. Temp was around 82F both times.

Fantastic read!!! Thank you very much. I'm hoping someone can spawn these regularly, so they can become more available in the hobby. I also think it would be neat to have a thread dedicated to spectabilis and the progression of their existence in the hobby:)

I also have an article in AFM about them, but it's in my storage unit a few towns over. Next time I'm there I'll take a look see for it.

I would appreciate that. These are gonna be a new species for me and I am interested in any info I can find.

Mine are still small, ~3". I keep mine at 82 with plenty of WCs.

IME, they are indeed aggressive towards each other. But so far, only in a bullying way and not a damaging way. I keep mine with other SA dithers, Cory's and Serpae's. The Specs leave them alone. Its like they're not even a dither. If that makes sense.

Gotta love Caquetaia's!

I don't think your dithers would post much of a threat towards them just like silver dollars etc but do you have any other cichlids with them? I have a bunch of Midas that I can afford to use along with a group of SD's
