Anyone use an electric training collar for their dogs?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Beagles have a nasty habit of barking ALL the time. Also, their barks are extremely loud. I'd do it if I couldnt train him.
Ive worn a bark collar before when I managed a Petsmart. It actually got stuck on my neck. Luckily, one of my employees was there to help me by continuously pressing the button...
But they're not bad. After the first few zaps, they get the point.

Why am I not suprised by this? LOL

i have a beagle too and for some reason if the animal isn't in our yard he doesn't really care too much, BUT if it is...he's gone
BUT in the house he's a different dog...listens and everything

I also have a Sportdog SD400 for my german shorthair pointers. they listen very well, but need some reminders of who is boss in the fields. I have been using it on our one GSP for a few months now and they ONLY time I have needed to use the "shock" was during the training. 99% of the time now she just listens to me, and if she is too far away for me to yell, i beep the collar and she comes back to me. Its very key to watch the training videos they give you and use the collar as they tell you, you dont want them to become affarid of it. When i go and get mineo ut, the dogs start bouncing around like mad since they know it means field day.

I've used an electric collar with my pitbull and it is one of the best pieces of equipment I own. It is very important to train correctly with it so that your dog doesn't develop an avoidance to the collar. when you first put it on take the dog for a walk, play, or do something fun. definitely do not put the collar on only when you want to correct your dog.

If you are working on off-leash control I would highly recommend getting one. Many e-collars come with a vibration button that does not shock at all. My dog responds better to the vibration than the shock.

Don't worry that owning an e-collar is "being mean" to your dog; a slight correction with an e-collar is much safer than the dangers of being off-leash. You will need very few corrections if you train correctly. If you get comments about the collar, you can put on a bandana to cover it up.

My Staffordshire Terrier is immune to these... I've had him since he was a pup @ 8 wks old. Once he got around 5 months old, it was mid winter, and all he would do is eat snow and then come inside and eliminate...

I bought the petsafe one that numbers up to 10. Started with 1 and went up. 10 still wasn't enough to make him stop doing what he was doing.

He's 3 years old, and STILL doesn't listen. The other 2 dogs know every command possible. lol

I find it very cruel for man's best friend. There must be another way..

i don't see the problem with it and if it trains the dog then that y not. but just make sure u get a good one cause some of those hurt. when i was a few years dumber this one kid had one for his dog and we all tried it out and that thing hurt no joke then the kid felt kinda bad for his dog.

I used it on my pit. He was already working some bad behavior habits when I adopted him, but I was able to work with him, and he is very good at listening and responding. He still can't walk on a leash worth a damn, but anyway...
The collar works best when you use the command (you are using negative reinforcement) NO, followed by the vibrate/beep, followed by the shock. I never had to go over a 4 for Casino. It had been 4 years since he had even seen the collar, but I got it out and moved it. Anyway, he saw it and took off. He remembered what it was and what it did. But for me, it was a combination of hot dog treats for listening, reinforcing NO with a beep then a buzz, and he fell right in line. He's not as smart as my other dog (she's an old 14), but I think he is a lot more attentive.

i find that a stungun works best. on mine you can set the voltage down so i have it on 50,000 volts. its one of the ones that shoot the wire probes, because when my dogs runs, it RUNS. usually heblacks out for an hour or so giving me enough time to bring it into the house and lay him in his bed. Works like a charm, just try not to use more than once on him a day. I reccommend it for all big dog owners as a must have
