I just recently used the regular oil based (not the gel) Varathane stain, and the separate poly. Both were certainly dried in 24 hours or under, and allowed for additional coats without issue.

Maybe the gel is different???

I used a gel stain of a different brand recently on raw pine. It coated on very thick with a roller, thicker than what the pine absorbed. As it became tacky I had to use a paint thinner soaked cloth to wipe off the excess in order for it to dry properly.
What is the humidity like in the area where it is drying?
Being a stain it should still be taken in by the wood and reveal the grain, not be thick like acrylic paint.

dried, it took 48 hours tho 😮‍💨

i now see why they charge $2k-$4k for stands 😝

super slow process, if i had more space i could go a little faster, structure is mostly complete and can start staining plywood 🤪
