Anyone who keeps rays can you please share some numbers?

I have "heard" that high TDS affects fish digestive system. Anyone else hear this? TDS is bad for a lot of the more fragile plecos and discus from what I hear so probably the same with rays. I use two different water purifiers a RO/DI which my tanks get 50-60% of and then the rest is a Kold-steril unit.

I know this goes against everything you believe but maybe your filtration is too large and too complex. My big system is 750 gallons with 8 adult rays ranging from 13-17" and a stupid turtle, I run a 200 gpd drip that is run through 2 carbon filters, My pump is pushing 55 gph after head loss through a sock filter then a 30 gallon bead filter. Water is top notch and everyone is happy. I am concerned you have lots of dead spots or places for poo and food debris to get hung up and even though you have lots of water and lots of flow you might be leeching bad stuff back in instead of taking out.

Also, I do not believe pup loss was due to TDS. If so you would see the others having issues.

IF the problems were on the 750 with the most complex filter I could believe it, but the pup/growout tank is very simple. 55 gallon sump, 1 sock, scrubbies from previous filter, ceramic rings, heater, return pump. Additional fluval 405 (to move with the rays). By far the simplest filter in the house.

I could sit here all day long and say water is top notch and everyone is happy, Very easy to see right through the 10' length of the tank. Rays are breeding so everything is just fine right?

So if it's not the TDS and the other rays are fine then I won't loose another pup right? Then what happens if I do?

Thank you! Finally.

I'd think high TDS would also effect osmoregulation, but I could be wrong. I personally think my inability to keep Discus or Hydrolycus species is directly related to the TDS.

Only way to know is going to be by comparing numbers, which is why I was hoping I'd get more people to contribute #s to compare.

Already lost 1 pup so far. No need to worry huh? I disagree.

So if the TDS # means nothing can you speculate why it's impossible for me to keep sensative species like Hydrolycus or Discus?

Those high TDS #s don't scream poorly maintained tank to you?

Well, if these #s are normal, I'll feel a LOT better after other people start posting thier similar numbers, but I don't have ANY numbers to compare yet, after all that was the reason I started this thread..... ;)

Its actually pretty low.

Most species will do fine as long as your TDS is under 1000 ppm.

Sadly, I think you will have to look for a cause elsewhere.

Sorry ive never had a reason to check tds and i prob never will but is the pup tank the only tank with pot scrubbies? It always seemed to me pot scrubbies were a bad idea it seems they would have lots of dead apots and spot for debris to build up.

interesting, what do you mean dead spots?
i have always used scrubbies, that is all the media i use as a matter of fact.

Same here for my rays the last 4+ years.........and have only tested my water for anything maybe 2-3 times this year and probably less before that. I'm a bad boy:)

Pot scrubbies were used to seed the ceramic rings. I have scrubbies in all the systems here, but only a fraction of what I used to have.

I will admit I hate using them submerged, they turn hard enough that it would leave bruises if hucked hard enough at someone, but love them in wet/dries. I just use them to seed new media and after that I slowly pull them back out. Been phasing the scrubbies out since this summer.

ANYONE that has salt/reef tanks, or an RO unit should have a TDS meter, should be pretty easy to find a local reef geek, then just barrow it.... lol. I think the one I have was only like $40.

As far as looking for a cause elsewhere...... No problem. Been looking for causes for 5+ years now, and don't have jack squat but ideas and I haven't proven any of them.

Can tell you one thing though, not gonna spend another 5 years. I don't get this figured out and I'll be done with rays. Sell them all and make a downpayment on a house and start building. Then hopefully after a few years someone else will have figured something out and maybe then I'll actually have a chance at keeping Armatus and breeding rays. But watching pups die is NOT something that intrests me, in fact it's making me angry, sad, and insane all at the same time. I wouldn't wish this crap on someone I didn't like. It's one thing to have something bad happen, figure out what went wrong, learn from it, and don't let it happen again, but not knowing what's going on, and all the unanswered questions is torture.

160ppm after drip
180-190 in grow out 180gl 4-6 rays 10"under
200-210ppm in my bigger tanks
