I'm planning on getting a long haired black and tan male for my 9yrs old nephew. Nephew is still recovering from a medical issue and his hand and eye coordinations are not back to 100% yet. Do you'll think these will make good pets or should I look for a different breed? Want a breed with the brown eyespots above the eyes.

I didn't want to go with a chihuahua because pretty much everyone I have come into contacts with are nippy.

Any tips/advises, good or bad will be greatly appreciated.

Dachshund are loyal to there oweners. great house and outside dog. beautiful dogs in nature. easy to train. just great dogs. IMO. If i could i would get one.

no personal experience, but I have heard they are the top most aggressive dog breed....they are loyal to their owners, protective, but with strange animals or people, they are very nippy. My neighbor has one and he won't let my boyfriend near him without biting....just what I know of them. Every one of them will be different, but I would say thy are more nippy then a chihuahua

I have a mini, it is the best dog in the world here is a pic. it must have been abused when younger it is very shy. dachsunds are NOT aggressive sure they will bark but our dogs have only bitten one person and he diserved it. our dogs are very social.

awesome, loyal dogs. not aggressive, very playful and friendly. The only problem is that they are very susceptible to back injury due to their elongated body. Maybe not the best choice for a young child.

I dont have one but my bf brother's roomie has one. He is a very lovable dog. He is very good at listening and easy to train. Def. Loyal to his owner and very loving also. He has never had a problem with the dog. Not agressive at all. I think its a great pick for a small dog. Although I dont know about smaller kids and those dogs b/c they are all in their 20s.

It really doesn't have to be a pure bred if you are lookign for something to keep him company and be a sort of therapy dog... Try looking on www.petfinder.com

And the temperament really depends on it's genetics and the way it is brought up, a dog with bad breeding is likely to have mental or physical problems, our mini schnauzer for example:
We rehomed him recently because he would snap and attack our other dogs, good with all people though.
We found his pedigree papers and saw that his dad was his grandfather, and his great grandfather, same with his mothers side. alot of breeders have inbred messed up dogs.

I have met wonderful sweet doxies, but I've also met some very unstable agressive ones.

I highly, highly suggest looking in shelters for a pup and saving a life and finding your nephew a friend at the same time.

rotfl at them being aggressive. i've had two in my life. they were great dogs. our first dachshund lived to be about 15yrs old and our other one is 5 now. the only thing is they are prone to back problems b/c of their body shape. both of ours have had to have back surgery which is VERY pricey!! our 5yr old had to have back surgery earlier this year and still has a problems walking with his back legs from time to time. other than back problems they make great pets. ours is pretty protective of us but loves to play with me and my g/fs pomeranian and my sisters dachshund.

They're great dogs, and will keep you laughing.
Like others said though, they will bark at ANYTHING.
Don't let them jump either, or make them "stand-up" to get treats as both of these things put pressure on the spine.

Also, forgot to add:
My current dachshund was a "rescue" from people who bought it as a pet for there child, I dont know how old the child was but somehow it ended up snapping at the kid and the parents thougt it was all the dogs fault.
Some dachshunds can be quick to bite...

Did you decide if you're getting one yet?

I did forget to add the back problems they have, all of the ones I've known have had back problems, simple things like slipping off of the couch, or being even slightly overweight can hurt or put a lot of pressure on their backs.. 2 I've known had to have back surgery for a ruptured disc from them trying to jump up, but coming back down on their butts.
