Anyone with experience with the Emperor 400 bio-wheel filter?

I am piecing together my 55g tank and want to know everyone's experience with the Emperor 400 bio-wheel filters. I have used nothing but AC filters on my smaller tanks and they are great but am deciding between the AC110 and 400 for my tank.

Is the $35 premium the AC110 has over the Marineland worth it? Can I use my own media in the Marineland like I can with the AC? I am not a fan of replacing cartridges...
 
Got 2 emp400s running right now. They are great filters and keep the water super clean.
 
i have em both. not as much flexibility with media tho on the emp 400, both work well and i dont change cartridges till they r completely fallin apart anyway. emp 400 has a second plastic cartridge that you can put media of choice in. i give the slight edge to ac tho but the price of emp 400 kinda equals it out
 
Thanks for the tips. Are the bio-wheels loud? My ACs are absolutely silent but I've heard the bio-wheels make a splashing sound. Its going in my bedroom so white noise isn't a problem but a rushing waterfall I am trying to avoid.
 
You do not need to use the filter cartridges with them.They are a waste of money. Get some of this,

and cut them to fit in front of the media baskets that come with the filter.

That will provide the mechanical filtration,the wheels provide the biological filtration,what other filtration do you want to add?

They work fine IME. Quiet,easy to use,and if you buy the filter pads and cut them to fit,very affordable.
 
they are not loud as long as you keep the water level equal with the lip of the water overflow. it then is almost completely silent, just keep the water level up and you will be happy with them.

Ditto! They are also great because you can customize what media to put in there.
 
Have 2 Emp400's a 55gal , and 1 Emp400 on another 30gal,..very happy with these
filters,..water crystal clear and params allways in check,..mine are going on 4yrs now. Never had AC's but hear they flow more,..cost more too
