You can make a sump out of whatever items you can imagine as long as they're fish safe.

Like everyone else said though, the pvc thing wouldn't really be cost effective.

and water tight!!!

I would hope people figure that out on their own ;)

then again I could see it now:

"Why is my sump leaking? No one told me it had to hold water!...."

Just use a bunch of 5 gallon buckets. They are bigger and cheaper! The only other problem I see with this system is that plumbing everything to gether with a series of pipes etc is much more restrictive than overflowing chambers

WWMD?? (what would MacGyver do??)

I agree with the buckets! In fact... I made a DIY filter with 1 and a half 5 gallon buckets.. I basically chopped one bucket in half and drilled holes in the bottom, then drilled slightly larger holes in the bottom of the other bucket.. filled it with (new) hair curlers (fake bioballs!), placed the half bucket on top of that which I filled with (new!!) pillow stuffing. Then I took the lid, cut a hole in it, put in a funnel I made and it was good to go. Then I just used a 500 gph powerhead, and away it went. At first I tried to suspend it with some 300lb monofilament, but eventually switched to the rocks that surrounded the pond. YES I used it on my brother's outside pond. We even made clever use of a bush to camoflage it, and put a piece of acrylic underneath to direct the water back into the pond. IMHO, MacGyver would have been proud.. :D :naughty:

hope this was of some kind of help.. I love DIY projects..

I think when people start doing these types of things, the general issue isn't whether or not it will work, it just becomes a problem of "over-engineering" things.. ..in my trade, more often than not, the simplest solution becomes the best. When it comes to something as specific as a filtration system, the biggest concern is LONGEVITY!

good luck!

i heard ABS leeched toxins and is not water safe.. anyone mind confirming?

yes it's known for ABS plastics to release toxins, but only when heat or certain chemicals are applied. ...afaik..

and I'm happy to admit that I could be wrong.. :uhoh:
