I have a 6-7" pacu in a 55 gallon tank.(yes i know hes going to outgrow the tank soon) He spends all day sitting at one end of the tank facing the back of the tank. Hes been like this for a few weeks. Hes been really easy to spook lately as well. If i go anywhere near his tank he freaks out. If you have/had pacu and could possibly give me some advice on what to do to bring him out of his shell id appreciate it.

They are a schooling fish that do best in groups. That and it's probably bored in that size tank. What other fish are in with it? How much decor is in the tank for it to swim around? Does it have a good hidding spot?

I had two oscars in the tank with him but they fought ALOT. they were always nipping eachothers fins so i moved the oscars to a 30 gallon and just gave them to a friend for his huge pond. He seemed happy until i put guppies in his tank now he acts like hes mad at me. I took the ornaments and gravel out when he kept spooking and hitting it. I didnt want him to hurt himself. Hmmm...not sure how keen i am on getting a second pacu for him to have a friend. Hes already growing out of hand and Im looking at some DIY's for a 500 or larger size tank. My husband really wants to build one himself for the pacu.

I put a wiffle golf ball in with mine and he'd play with it for hours. Cover the back and ends of the tank with a dark colored paper so it only see you coming to the tank from the front to see if it calms down. Is the bottom clear too? Mine hated a clear bottom.

How the water quality too?

sometimes if the room is not visited often fish are spooked by movement. you can have something that moves put in the room (fan that goes from side to side).
also getting another fish for it would be a good idea.

the advice of getting him some tank-mates one your tank can handle it is the absolute best thing to make him happy. i had 4 pacu at one point, along with a large tiger oscar, and they swam together back and forth all day long. even now, my 2 pacu are always with and following my tiger oscar.

just like little neon tetras need schools, pacu do too. there over-grown tetras..... problem is, their the size of 1,000 neons

I agree I keep and the others I myself have 3 very large pacu and they can get very emo! they like each others company and yours also they love to play with things little balls even food time can be fun try some grapes you'll see him playing with it for a while like a dog before he eats it but agreed you needd to get him some friends...

Ill see about getting him some smaller species friends.I dont want anything to take up too much space so he can stay in there til i can get him a bigger tank. I definitely dont want oscars again tho. I just got rid of my other two. They are soooo messy. I did put a grape in his tank the other day and all it did was sink to the bottom. He ignored it. I moved him into a thirty gallon yesterday so I could clean his 55 and get all the stupid guppies out of it. When they started breeding they threw off my ammonia and it went thru the roof and with the tank being so big they are hard to catch. Now that he is alone in his thirty gallon he swims around it all day.And as for covering the tank Ill try that. The tank he lives in is in my living room and he sees me all day. He just spooks when I walk over to it.
