Anything but pool filter sand!

Silica sand is great.

sorry i dont mean to hijack the thread but what is the name of the brand that makes the pfs at home depot?

I want sand so they can still sift through the substrate and I like how debri stays on top of sand so it can be picked up by the current. I have 2 aquaclear 110 on the tank and even with a pre-filter they still catch sand and the impellers suffer. I don't want to lose those filters.

Rock and a hard place, or that`s the way it seems to me.
PFS is always brought up because it is cheap and heavy.
Not so heavy that diggers/sifters have a problem with it, but just a tail flip won`t send a bunch into suspension.
I`m right with you on being tired of material getting into filters and grinding up the components.
You would think they could make the impeller systems out of materials that can stand up to a bit of sand every now and then.
I never liked the look of a big chunk of sponge on a filter intake.
Always had a mass of poop stuck to it so that a bunch would fall off during cleaning time.
Sorry, I got no answer for you.
But me, I think the problem lies with the materials used for impeller systems and not with the type of substrata used.

I am 100% with you on the impellers. You would think they would make them a little more durbale.

Anyway guys NOBODY sells PFS near me not home depot not lowes NOBODY! The only place that sells it is Leslies. I have read about sandblasting sand and pavers sand. Or they good to use in an aquarum?

This was the type of pavers sand I was going to use because Im pretty sure the lowes near me carries it.http://www.lowes.com/ProductDisplay?partNumber=71359-82589-WGM30003&langId=-1&storeId=10151&productId=3138061&catalogId=10051&cmRelshp=req&rel=nofollow&cId=PDIO1

Does anyone see any problems with this sand. I will have to look at sandblasting sand.

i know some one who has used that sand and he said it took to much to rinse it clean so he decided not to use it.
see if the have a damaged back of it that they will sell you cheap and test it first, before you buy a lot of it.
thats what i did with the play sand from lowes(turned out to be to fine, got kicked up easy)

Thanks buddha I'll probably just take some from a bag. Worst thing I will use the sand for my leopard geckos who actually prefer fine sand. But the way things are going I might end up with gravel :(.

they usually have bags that got busted open,so if they let you just buy some out of the busted bag.(the guy at my lowes let me take a bag that was half empty for 2 dollars.

Thanks looks like I will have to do my own research then and see if I can find something.

Well I couldn't find any sand that I liked so I picked up some pea pebbles instead. I gotta say I like the way it looks and the darker color makes my fish look better. And there is no chance of it getting sucked into my intake. I am happy with it overall.
