Anything for a 55gal?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
NO! You should have at least a 2' wide tank to keep any aro for life and around three times that for the length.

Welcome to MFK!!!

I'm afraid the only Osteoglossiformes (bony-tongue) you can keep in a 55 is Pantodon buchholzi, the african butterfly fish.

A 55 is simply not deep (front to back) enough for even the smallest species of arowana.

thats a fish you dont here too much about. i think they are a very cool fish. i saw one once and intended on picking it up, but never got around to it. if i run into one again i think i will get it.

if you like the aro look but cant house it, the butterfly is an option.

oh yeah..welcome to MFK too!!!

Thanks for the welcome guys... Ok so... No Arowana.. What other fish (predator type) can i house in the 55gal?... I want something that will looking nice. I think African cichlids may be the way to go....

ive had actually been looking for one for awhile when i got a chance to go to a new lfs i hadnt heard about, i was looking around and they had a BUNCH of awsome fish, they had little 4in. jardinis for $80 and a payara along with some neat other aros and a big TSN when i found a tank in the corner stocked with about 8 african butterflies:D, i was excited and got 2 of them for $13 each.

so jlui if you see any " poor mans arownas" pick 'em up.

the only problem w/ most 55 gal tanks is that they are only a foot wide. so that really narrows the size of the fish you can keep in it. i think an african cichlid tank would be cool. i am currently working on one myself.

What do you mean "poor mans arownas"??

Is there a real name to these guys? How big do they get? Where can I get them?
