This is a friends, I'm assuming sailfin. The first picture was about two months ago, you can sorta see the patch that I'm wondering about. The second picture, although blurry, shows what it looks like today.

The pleco is about 4" long and about two months old.

Thoughs about the different coloured areas?

Tank size, params, temp, tankmates? Some of them are just patchy like that, mine has a patch like that on his belly area. However, if it's only grown that much in 2 months something might be awry.

Has your friend noticed anything else abnormal about the pleco? If not, then it is most likely completely normal. They camouflage themselves when they feel threatened.

Sorry, its a 40 breeder. Temp is kept at 78F. Ammonia is 0, water changes every other week about 50%. Two filamentosa barbs that basically keep to themselves, and there is a breeding pair of convicts in the tank, but only about two inches long. They completely ignore the pleco whenever i'm around watching. Think they might be annoying him when we cannot see them?

I've never seen other patchy plecos, but he seems healthy and eats well. Do you have a picture to share?

I have a 180 myself. I also graciously told him that i'd adopt him :-p

Would that be large enough?

Looks like stress colours to me. Or it could be the light coloured substrate.

Yes a 180 is Awesome

EDIT- it is 100% the colour if the substrate. The second pic is the same tank with flash right?

I can't find any decent pics of mine right now, I usually don't take pics of mine when it's in camo coloration. I found these on google, though:

Ok and the first thing I notice in all or all but one of those pics is a light coloured substrates.

That's just a coincidence, as you can see in the 2nd to last pic I posted, they change to the same color reguardless of the color of their surroundings.

Again, just a coincidence. And in the last pic, the substrate isn't nearly as light as it appears, the camera I took that pic with had an awful auto- white balance, so all my tank pics were green and overexposed.
