I went to my lfs today and saw a african pike hepsetus odoe and an african tiger fish. I dont know which species the atf was but it looked like vittatus or forskalli. Anyways i wanted to know which one i should get or should i get both. the african pike was about 8" for 40$ and the atf was 8" for 115$. Tell me your experiences with these fish and which one you recommend. the atf is a bit pricey but if its worth it i'd get it. Could i put them together? I'll appreciate any info on either one of these.

i dont know about the atf's personally but i know one that size could go gor 150-175 possibly more.... i know a few members are really into them so they have to be something great

African pike only live a few years

I have kept both fish before and honestly, the ATF (forskalli) was much more impressive to me. More active, more 'wild' looking... because of it's visible teeth display!! :grinyes:

Try and get both if you can, and see for yourself!

yeah get both.. in the african waters, kafue pike stays at the shallow waters while the atf hunts at the deeper side.

get both and put them together and you will end up with only H odoe. The odoe will DESTROY an equally sized ATF. ATP (Pike) is much heavier bodied, more aggressive more of a bully at immature sizes. as ADULTS, ATF naturally eat odoe pikes... but under 12", ATF are not the sturdiest of fish and would be killed and/or eaten by the Odoe pike.

My 4-6" Brycon dentex beat the hell out of my 10" ATF.

The pike makes a great fish if you have a tank between 110- 180 gal... for ATF you will need something 600gal or larger for a mature specimen, thought the seem to grow slow once they reach 8-9".

I've had both and personally, I REALLY liked the odoe... I actually like it better than the ATF, but the ATF is more "impressive" and was a better fit for my community... the Odoe had some social issues and had to be sold.

i would get both but if u can only get one get the atf bc i love them, and if u dont tell me where i can go get him, im serious :)

hewhorunswithscissors hit the nail on the head. If you get both, you'll end up with an H. Odoe. If you want the ATF, really consider the size tank you'll eventually need before you buy this fish.

Never owned an ATF, so I can't comment on that but I have had an odoe. It was an awesome fish. Very personable for a characin - it would follow me around the tank and beg for food. Eagerly tore apart feeders but also ate anything I tried to feed it, which was very convenient (including shrimp, pellets and even peas!). It grew from 3" to about 8" pretty quickly.

yes , tanksize should be sufficient. i have no problem so far with two kafue and a vittatus. i feel its all boil down to the temperament of the fish, if space permits set-up two individual tanks.
