Apartment questions (Ohio)

Few other questions.

Should I even tell them about my tanks. Like the apartment people. Do you think they will consider these "pets" and charge me an extra 50 bucks or so for fish?

I'm also looking for a 2 bedroom apartment, so I can have a whole room devoted to the fish. :) On a first floor apt., there shouldn't be any weight problems shoud there. There will be the 125,56,55,29,and 20 long. I would also like to get a rack up of 10's for a few different frogs. Oh yeah and my new tank which I am picking up saturday, a 35 hex. What you think, on a first floor apt. in one room there shouldn't be any problems?

You definitely should tell the apartment manager or property owner if you are planning on having a fish aquarium larger than 50 gallons. Many leases state that you cannot have one larger than 25 gallons. Even though it will be your home, you are renting and they can enter your apartment for any "emergency" even if you are not at home and only have to give 24 hours notice for any other reason to come in. It could mean an immediate eviction, if they see that you have aquariums that they haven't approved of beforehand.

Not only could you lose your new home, you could also lose your security deposit or be forced to pay for the all the rent still due on the lease. My mother in law is an apartment manager and sometimes the owners are real sticklers when it comes to this stuff.

Good luck

No worries on the floor. If the building is up to code then it should be able to have 16 people (about 2850lbs) standing is a small area without falling through the floor. It would be a good practice to place the tanks along load bearing walls. I would be willing to bet when you walk through that fish room, the tanks will quake a little and make ripples in the waters surface.

I would recommend starting with only the 55. If you feel college is too easy the first quarter then bring in another (repeat next quarter).

Well with the tank I have now it would be 2280 in a room. Which are the load bearing walls? The side walls of the room. It would be a first floor apt., so hoping nothing will fall through lol. Also the apt. isn't on a campus, I'm in college now actually. I like it. :)

I would probably have the 125 in the living room anyways. I have to boast my MFK skills don't I?:grinno:

Definitly tell them about the fish tank unless its 10 or 20 gal, take it from someone who didnt. I had a 300 in an apartment before and they had to come in to do one of their "emergency inspections" and lets just say they were not to thrilled with me and my roomate at that point and it cost us some hard earned cash to make peace.

It all depends on the lease. For my situation you can have cats, birds, and fish. Cats required a pet deposit, and the rest had no restrictions. I even asked about a tank size limit, they said no restrictions "but when you get these massive 50 gallon tanks you are responsible for damage" ...i didn't mention i was bringing a few more gallons than that, haha.

One major issue that has come up is maintenance. A few weeks ago they came in to upgrade the breaker, electricity was out for a few hours..no big deal its summer and i had battery pumps. But the work isn't finished and everything needs to be moved three feet from the walls for when they come back....not fun when you have a bunch of huge tanks.

Not to say it should discourage you, but just realities to keep in mind.

:(:(:( That would literally suck.

Well I emailed a place.

The 1 bedrooms are 429 and a flat rate of 25 for water/sewage/trash. So $454 a month. With a $150 security deposit. I'm psyched, now to tell the parents of my plans, lol. ;):D

Oh yeah and I asked if having a "few"(they don't know I mean like 6 tanks) fish tanks is okay? They said it should be fine and I won't have to pay a pet fee which makes sense.

make sure you dont place any tanks in front of any windows.
its considered a safety hazard, if there is a fire and you need to climb out a window, but a 180 is blocking your path, you're probably going to have to break the tank, or burn

also, make sure you're running a dehumidifier, when you're in a small place like an apartment, that water will build up in the air very quickly which then freezes the windows shut in the winter, which is also a safety violation

my last place did a safety check, and found the windows basically frozen. they weren't happy and told me i had 3 days to have the tanks out or have a large dehumidifier in place. and in the winter in ohio, a dehumidifier is not an easy item to find in stores!!

Thanks guys for all of your help, it has helped tons! Just for an update on me getting an apt. Well I found one and was approved. I'm moving in September first. Thanks MFK.
