So last Friday I added some coconut shell pieces, and noticed the male chasing away others from one of the shells and saw the female in their guarding the eggs. Since this is a community tank, I am not sure how long or if any of the fry will survive. I just enjoy watching natural behavior.

How cool! I have never seen anyone use coconut shells before in a tank. Did you buy them sold for that purpose or use ones from the store?

Congrats on the spawn:)

I got the idea from a SA/CA cichlid breeder in my club. I wanted something more natural looking and not half clay pots. I ordered them from ebay, not sure if they are sold for that purpose thought. Price wasn't bad, about 10$ shipped for 4 halves.

Thanks!

Congrats☺

That's awesome. I might have to look around for some.
Clay pots would look out of place for my tank decor, but those coconut shells look natural and beautiful.

I may be overstocked, but I have an auto-drip doing 40g a day and also a boatload of pothos and other plants. I have little to no aggression.

120g (60"x18"x26") 55g sump.

Stock is.
6 Angels
3 German Blue Rams
3 Bolivian Rams
3 Checkerboard Cichlids
4 Apistograma Cacatouides. 1m:3f
2 Keyhole Cichlids
12 Cardinal Tetras
8 Rummy Nose Tetras
8 Corydora aeneus
1 Clown Pleco (that I never see)

It's definitely not a biotope, but I wanted to stick with SA/CA species.

Very nice.I like the tank and it's inhabitants. I like to see smaller cichlids in a nicely decorated natural looking tank.
I've always had a soft spot for angels.

Thanks!, I started with a few larger cichlids, severums, texas, nicaraguan etc. and didnt enjoy the aggression and the fact that at 3-5 fish I was over stocked.
