APOLLO DOVII WOLF CICHLID

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Ive been puttin crickets in the tank for the last few days because he simply won't eat,,, I ordered some Krill,, it will be delivered today,, How much success have you fellas had with krill??

I don't have a Dovii but my fish tear krill up. None of them are wild caught though, I don't want to go through the trouble of replicating the conditions of where it was caught from.

The only way to get him eating is by starving him for couple of days.
Add few pellets and move away from the tank, if untouched , then remove it.
Try again next day.... The usual breakin time is 7 days , but it can vary.
What have you been feeding him since you got him?
One favourite food almost like crystal meth for most of my fishes including the stubborn Peacock bass was Hikari massivore.
Key is for you not to breakdown

The only thing he will eat is crickets and other small bugs I put in the tank,, been kinda worried, he is not eating and pellets,, I have some krill coming in today

Let me tell you something, I have a Sorubim lima/Sorubim elongatus grow-out right now in my 55g sump. He didn't eat anything (frozen tilapia fillets, frozen shrimp, pellets, etc.) for over 2 months, but he didn't croak despite being only 6". After trying all kinds of non-live foods I left him to starve for a week then tried to feed him. If the fish doesn't bite wait another 1/2 - 1 week until you break him, until then try again. Keep doing this until he takes something frozen or a pellet.

NEVER and I mean NEVER give a large fish you are trying to break live food. Always try to use thawed shrimp or fish stuffed with pellets; the more you feed the fish live food the longer it will take to break. No healthy fish will starve itself to death, eventually it will eat so you have to wait it out as well.

On a side note, while it doesn't apply to your current fish as it's 17", I find breaking a small fish (6" or less) easier with tank mates because their feeding activity spurs the fish to instinctively feed by giving it confidence in the food (especially aggressive cichlids).

OK i'm going to throw a taboo in there in regards to feeding issues.

there is a method i have used with larger fish that can work with both methods mentioned above. i'm a worry keeper, if some this isnt eating i will sit all night trying to work out what i have done wrong, and i just cant stand starving a fish to get it to eat, but then i have only had this issue a couple of times.

as mentioned about other fish can help to stir others in to eating pellets and alike, but im not going to say fill your dovii tank with fish to get it to eat cause it will but not the pellets hahaha. but the same principle can work with smaller fish, by smaller i mean like neon tetras etc. I used zebra danios with my goonch and it worked a charm. stick a group of neons in the tank, most large cichlids wont bother with such small fish when they are swimming but these small fish group together when feeding and the dovii may take the pellet during this (and a few of the fish granted) now i used neons as an example, but i understand people have a personal devotion to these also so a small fast swimming fish will work but needs to be a group. as soon as the dovii is taking pellets you remove the smaller fish.

now im not saying this is a hard and fast way of getting your dovii to eat but if your a worrier like me then it can work. best results do seem to be from a period of starvation.

oh also nice dovii he is stunning. my male is just hitting 15"

Hardly surprising he's not eating, he's a mature fish that has been ripped from his home, shoved in a box, sloshed around for days then put into a tiny glass prison. That's going to take some adjusting to...
