Appropriate for Oscars?

18 inches in height should be ok and get as big a tank footprint as you can, if your going for five feet length get 24 inch width as well. Ive got a tank this size with a 15 inch longibarbis catfish in it.

a 125 would be good as well, but a 180 gives you 65 more gallons to work with (because a 125 really only holds like 110 gallons, and a 180 holds like 175)

But I don't know if the measurements (LxHxW) will be okay for one oscar with a tankmate/2 oscars...

Should I just look for a tank that's

Length - 6 feet

Width - 2 feet

Height - 2 feet

Or do you think I should just go with the ones they sell at PetsMart?

I want the oscar to grow and be happy... and be able to turn around, eat, play, swim, etc.

Which tank is recommended so that they have room to swim and do other stuff?

If I get the wrong tank, the oscar probably wouldn't be able to make a turn, and other stuff... which will get him stressed enough to get sick.

craigslist for the win. you might have to wait for the right one, but it will be cheaper for sure, and most of the time people throw in the extras

if you are patient and look around..... I picked up a 6ft 125galllon w/ black pine cabinet stand, plus (2) fluval 405 filters and a wet/dry all for $125..... proof that you can find some great deals if you look around... by the way I found mine right here on MFK CLASSIFIEDS... and there always seems to be larger tanks for sale in California!

the bigger the better, but really any of these tanks listed will work for 2 oscars plus a few tank mates.

the catch is that some are better than others.

even the 4 foot 150 gallon would be fine, as a 48x24 foot print is fine for what you are doing, and you have a large water volume to dilute waste.

a 6 footer might be even better, but you do lose some dilution power if you go with the 125 version.,

obviously, the 180 is the best option if possible.

but I think any of these big tanks will work for what you want to do with them.

there is also a 150 long size to consider too, which is 72x18x29 tall. Basically a 125 gallon on steroids.

my 150 is 72 X 20 X 24 (though i bought mine off a friend like 10 years ago and im not sure where/who made it)
so 150s come in a ton of different sizes,
but ya for just a few oscars any tank around that size would be nice, although... you are on a forum where the general consensus is "GO BIG OR GO HOME!!!" heh
and if you go that route your fish will love it just that much more, but imo any size around that is good

both Aqueon (All-glass) and Marineland (Perfecto) make the 150 gallon 6 footer.

your LFS should be able to order one in for you no problem.

Really, !!! I'll check it out!

I'll look for that tank... maybe on the maker's website or I'll call.

I've got 4 PetsMarts in a 60 mile radius around here. 1 of them sells the 125 g 6' tanks (just under $400 w/lights, lids) but the others don't. It all goes by how many sales a particular PetsMart has. So you might check the PetsMarts in neighboring towns/areas. The small PetsMart even goes to the bigger PetsMart for me and picks up 6' tanks and brings it to their (closer to me) store so I don't even have to drive out of my way. They don't mind because they get the sale for their paperwork. I've got one of those 150 g 31" tall tanks and they're a major pain to clean the bottom on. My Clown Loaches are in there because the Loaches keep the bottom spotless-I can't even reach the bottom of it. But-like others said-check around CraigsList.com, etc and you'll eventually find a good deal. Good for you making sure your Oscar has enough room :-)
