Mine is a steady 7.5

If your ph goes up from tap to tank then I would ask why....there must be something in the tank that is raising the ph.

Ph 8 is fine if constant.

I'm almost positive my ph raises that .2 due to the sand and rocks I have in my tank. So, basically once I get the ray acclimated properly, it should be fine (given that it is a healthy ray, eats and is with the appropriate tankmates)

I like your doberman! I had a red one ""blaze" growing up. He died due to heart failure last summer. Best dogs ever!! He would sleep with me under my covers, was very faithful, but also ate any food he could including cheeseburgers, pizza and his all time favorite, reese cups at christmas time!

I do not think that is a bad thing as the water will be buffered against a crash in ph, might be worth checking the hardness.

If you allow water to evaporate a lot and simply top up then the water get harder and harder due ti the fact that only pure water evaporates, therefore leaving the minerals etc behind (just a thought)

My water doesn't have time to evaporate. I do 50% w/c 2xs a week. THe grow out tank will be a 75g, then on to a 150g, then to a 180 and I will just grow from there, but that would probably last a few years if not life. I"m just looking for 2 male motoros.

I checked out my lfs today and they had some nice retics. They've been there a little over a month and were nice and fat. They fed them for me and were gobbling up the bloodworms as soon as they hit bottom. THey had male and females all around 4" disc size for $35 a piece, which is cheap around here. These are not my first choice on rays either. My biggest concern is the ph they are in now is 6. Im just wondering how hard it would be on them to acclimate them from 6 to 8. I think it may not be worth the risk.

That is easy, Just collect them in an insulated poly box (lfs should supply) then drip an airline from the main tank to the box over a few hours and they will be fine. Ask the shop to "purge" / starve them for 3 days before buying to keep the ammonia in the water low.

Sounds like they are going to a good home.

Mine comes strait from the well at 8.0. I have many rays and take a lot of time with acclimating them to ease on the transition. They do well in it right where it is although I understand if you want to breed at some point you may want to do some more research.

Ok thanks a lot guys. I think I may go back and rethink and get 3. My biggest was eating and them being healthy, which is no concern now. NOw that I know that acclimating them from a ph of 6 to 8 wont be too much stress, I believe I may be purchashing a few. I do know how to acclimate a fish properly, but was a little worried since rays are fragile, especially retics. But seeing now as acclimation process will not harm them, I believe I may get a few. My 75g growout is filtered w 2 AC110s and a little powerhead. The 150 is stocked with some fish that will get moved to the 75, 90 and 65 I have. The 150 is being filtered w an Fx5 and 2 xp4's. I still do a once weekly 50% w/c on that tank as well. I think once acclimated the rays will do great.

Be very careful with just a pair of ac10s, whatever you know about fish keeping rays will surprise you with the amount of waste and ammonia they produce. I know you will be doing big water changes but the ammonia spikes can be the killer. On a 75 gal you do not have a lot of volume, I w old still want a mature fx5 on that and still test the water daily. I do not think ac10s will be up to 3 fast growing pups
