Hao has it right. The head/body shape and color pattern changes with age. These should start coming in soon but you need to be sure you understand what you're getting before you aquire one of these, as they are a true commitment. This species gets huge! It is one of the largest freshwater fish in the world.

Yes, please note that the only respectable Arapaima keepers here either work for public aquariums or own personal 50,000 gallon aquariums. Take your pick. :D

Are u sure you have a big enough pond for that dude! He grow vastly large about 6-15 feet
i dont think arapaimas grow to 15ft anymore, now days usually 6-9 ft,12+ ft sorta hard to find(unless from Public aquarium who kept arapaima for years)

I think he would be able to tell that my post was a broad and humorous way of telling the person not to get an arapaima. I've seen John's videos and know that he has the means to keep what he is keeping. :)

arapaima gigas is scientific name and piracru is the local name and they are the same, when younger there head is normal when bigger theres like a hump shape due to fat
thats wat i thought but since Hao said it it must be right!!!

haushaushas, i love it when someone spells arapaima wrong...SOO funny! yes, there are 3-4 pirarucu species. basically there are green ones with red scales, and darker ones with not so many red scales.
