I was looking a aqadvisor and maybe someone can help me out with this. I was going to upgrade my tank to a 300 gallon where the dimensions are 96x30x25. Then I started to add the cichlids in like a Trimac, Midas, Festae, Cuban, Oscar, Salvini, and Vieja Synspila, but it shows afterwards need 113% aquarium space and may deal with territorial aggression later on. Is this accurate or a guesstimate from the website? The filtration should be fine from what I picked out, which is a Fluval FX5.

Its a pretty accurate website...not 100% accurate though...it is true that you may have to deal with aggression issues later on , especially when they're bigger. Depends on the individual fish though. I say try it, if it works it works...if it doesn't then I would maybe trade them for another fish you like and then see if that works. 300g should be good though at least for awhile. 1 FX5 will likely not be enough, I'd suggest at least two on that size tank and with that stock...and if you could get a third that would probably be ideal...or you could even get 2 fx5s and have a couple large HOB filters

I may end up keeping my 135 gallon fish tank just as a back up tank in case something happens. Is there any other filtration I can use with the FX5 or does it have to be a FX5 only?

Oh nice, ya you could just seperate the bully or bullies in that tank then. & its all up to you really as far as filtration goes

Ok, thanks. I may end up doing the FX5 and use the magnum 350 canister I currently have for another filtration. Maybe that will be enough for the 300 gallon tank.

I totally forgot about using a large sponge filter. Thanks for reminding me about that one, because I think it would work great with the FX5.

The aggression issue should not be taken lightly.
A 300 gal "may" work long term for that stock, especially if you get all of them young, at the same day/time, and they all grow up together. If you try to add one or 2 at a time, the early additions will have set up large territory's they won't want to share, and brutalize any newcomers.

Although these territorial battles can be bluff, as you can see above some aren't.

Even with this method, a backup tank is a great idea, because all cichlids can become territorial at certain stages of development, and dynamics are constantly changing.
