What kind of cichlid was that? Also, I currently have the Cuban and Oscar in my 135 gallon with the Vieja Synspila. Overall the Vieja thinks she's the boss of the tank, but the Oscar doesn't tolerate that at all. The Cuban to me is more of a threat than both those cichlids combined, but so far I finally have a tank established after a year. No fatalities except for one last year, but I sold the ones who were all bark, but no bite.

The dead one? Sorry I don't remember for sure, my guess is Amphilophus amarrillo, because they were sharing a 150 gal at the time.

The killer was Parchromis motaguensus red tiger.
And certain Vieja can dominate a tank. I've had a pair of V. zonatum, at another time, V. regani keep larger dovii and managuense pinned into corners. And I also find Oscars are typically not able to to handle Vieja aggression, once Vieja hit their stage of peak aggression.

How many did you have in your 150 gallon? I would of thought 150 gallon is plenty for 2 cichlids, if that is all you had in the tank. I went to a local fish store today and saw a 375 gallon which was more than likely 96x36x25. I may want to look into something like that to reduce the aggression a little more.

There were 4 motaguense and 5 amarillo at the time, I believe. When the motaguense paired up, they owned about 50% of the tank, all the others were crammed into the other half, and woe unto any other that crossed into the mated pairs side, as you saw in the pic.
I believe a 150 gal is really not a large tank. It is maybe half or less the size of a small drainage ditch, when you think about. In nature, a pair of medium cichlids would control a territory about 3 times that size to themselves.
