Aqua Clear Filters - When to Repair/Replace?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Depending on the type of filtration. For AC and canister, the filtration is partially pressurized, so higher flow rate can pressurized and trap particulate matter more thoroughly. For cartridge style hobs such as Whisper and Penguin, the flow is all gravity and higher flow rate just pushes overflow over the spillway earlier. I have two identical Penguin, one with original impeller and the other smaller side by side. The smaller impeller Penguin not only overflow later, but the diaper is more thoroughly clogged up than the regular one. Higher flow rate simply bypass earlier, shortening the useabilty life of the diaper.

Thanks for the many responses but there is one question that I have still unanswered:

I have the odd old filter that runs for a few minutes and then stops unexpectedly. I take a toothpick and give the impeller a hit and away it goes for a few minutes and then quits again so I am not using those. Does the actual motor start to act up before burning out?

Would the consensus then be that it is likely NOT the motor in this case and I should just replace either the impeller or the shaft or both? I have had these filters get to the rattling stage before but this is the first one that operates intermittently.

Change the impeller. If it is the motor a spare impeller is always useful. Infact i picked up a spare a couple of yrs ago. Never had to use it but doesnt hurt to have
