Aqua Clear or Marineland Penguin Filter???

I've got both. I like both. If I had to make a choice it would be the AC110. There a lot more versatile, flow a lot better, hold more media. Are insanely quiet in my opinion. Wanna buy an Emperor 400? I have a few.

ACs ... mainly for the superior media capabilities, and because I don't like HOBs that use cartridge filters ...

The Fluval C4 (rated for up to 70 gallons) is "far better" than the AC110 (rated up to 110 gallons)? That's pretty impressive.

How ever the new modle that I have used to give me issues every time I cleaned it. The impeller would not start right away. I would have to tap it to make it start, and it would take for ever it seamed like to prime.

Sounds like one of the coils is burnt out, I have a pond pump like that and every time I clean it I have to 'spin' the impeller to get it started. Probably the reason why the flowrate drops on yours after a week as well, once the resistance starts to increase (by build up on filter media) the impeller will 'stutter' each time it hits the burnt out coil.

Too late to return it to Marineland?

ac: great media options and loud but works amazingly great
ml: pretty bad unless you get the one with the spray bar it keeps the bio wheel spining and louder but again it works great for me
so tie i guess?
i think the ml is louder though not sure
