I got a (what I believe) to be a really good deal on a "previously enjoyed" AquaC Remora protein skimmer with the Maxi-Jet1200 pump. I did a nationwide craigslist search and ended up getting it for $60 shipped to me...

So it came in today. I gave it a little scrub and and put it in the tank. Pump fired on immediately and the skimmer started to fill up. My first question is the instructions mention a o-ring that goes around the collection cup. I didn't see it in the box so I assume he forgot it. Is this a required peice? If so where can I get one? Secondly I am currently getting a white foam (almost like soap bubbles... no i did not clean it with soap) coming up the foam tower. Does this mean it is working properly? Water shouldn't come up that tube in the collection, correct?

Lastly, how can I make the pump look better in my tank? The pump is currently just hanging from the skimmer. Should the pump sit on the ground? Do i need to worry about the intake on the pump sucking fish in?

I have the pump uncovered in my tank..you can buy a little overflow box for it though.

They make a skimmer where the pump sits on teh bottom, I think its for sumps mainly, its called the urchin.

The Oring is what allows you to adjust how wet the skimmate is. Being a new skimmer, and having it at the lowest setting, you are going to be getting a LOT of skimmate. Be prepared...and email AquaC, they will send you a new oring.

Water should not come up into the collection cup, only bubbles.

Ok. Well here is a pic of it on my tank. How would you clean up the look? I was thinking about cutting the tube to where the pump is at the top of the tank...

So there shouldn't be a problem running it for a few days without the oring...

Could I just go to like NAPA and get a large oring? Is it special in any way or just a oring?

How long before it starts to pull out the "good stuff"?

Mine took about a week or so to really start grabbing stuff. That O ring is also pretty important I think.

Oring is important...if you can get something for cheap that works, go for it.

I would cut down that tubing so that it was as close to the surface as possible. I am only using like two inches of tubing.

Your friend must have been using it in a sump setting, and that is why he modded it this way.

I dont think it will pull much of the good stuff no matter what...and it always will pull what it does pull...but obviously the good outweighs the bad, and that is why we still do it.

I'm gonna swing by some autoparts stores then and see what I can get...

Ok I grabbed 2 o-rings at napa (1.30 each)... Is it suppose to create a seal between the skimmer body and the collection cup or just hold the collection cup and various heights?

Here are pics after the tube was cut down and I put the o-ring on. Everything look proper? Also in the pics I posted before, the white foam is good yes? means it working?

+1 to what Fleshy said, mine is the same way, very close to the surface.

You can stop there and see, but honestly Aqua C has the best customer service. They will probably send you one for free.

Well I called and left a message a few hours ago... If they call me back i'll see what they say...

Anybody know about the o-ring? (question posted above)
