Aquaclear 110 making loud noises

I have a 55 gallon with an Aquaclear 110 and a biowheel filter. The Aquaclear 110 makes a really loud grinding noise and doesnt spin. I took out the impeller, it looks clean and theres no scratches. What could be wrong with it? I had this happen on a penguin biowheel filter. Could it be the play sand im using?

more then likely the sand

Remove the motor assy and clean it. Replace the impeller.

I took off the motor assembly and cleaned it. It is still loud.

i had the same problem with mine in my ray tank, i switched from fine sand to slightly bigger stuff (not gravel) just bigger grain sand, and it stopped in a few hours.
mine must have just worked itself out but try running the filter in a bucket of clean water for a bit, i found that if i tap the motor a bit it seems to dislodge some of the sand that has been stuck in there.
if that all does not work you might be in need of a new impeller.

put a sponge over the intake to solve that problem I use aquaclear sponges.

I have a brand new one with no sponge making the grinding noise and one ive had for year with a sponge that never makes that noise
