One on the AC50's on Juan's tank is this way. Even after multiple cleanings, every now and then it needs a nudge, then off to the races like nothing was ever wrong....
.....and,just as you described.I thought the thing was gonna fly up out of the filter and hit me in the eye.

Kind of like that air powered gun you like to play with?

Problem is when power goes off it probably wont restart when power comes back on unless you push it.

I guess I can live with that versus forking over cash that could be better spent elsewhere.

I think it has a bad impeller shaft.

I have one that does the same thing. I even have a screwdriver I use just to get the impeller going. As long as it spins, I’m keeping it. It even had a leak where the motor meets the plastic and I used that infomercial spray sealant to make it as seaworthy as that mans screen door boat. That stuff is pretty nice to have under the tank just in case.

I was going to use a screwdriver but then I thought that I might get electricuted so I found a long plastic rod to poke it with.

Glad it worked for you. I'm sure something can be replaced to fix it, I just never bother. I have a 110 and 70 that I use the same method on.
Smitty mentioned that the impellar rod might be the problem and that could be but as long as I can get it to run I want delve further into it.

I have found that the impeller shaft wears over time, especially if sand gets ingested. The only way to check if it's worn is to use a pair of pliers to pull the shaft out. Compare the diameter in the middle to the ends and you may notice a difference.

If you need to replace the impeller shaft, you'll also need a new impeller as the hole can become enlarged due to the impeller being a bit wobbly. I've replaced a few of each over the years due to wear.

This literally happened to me a couple days ago. I turned off my 110 for maintenance to clean the sponge. After I finished cleaning I plugged it back in and nothing; however, I did hear a faint humming sound. I removed the intake tube and saw the impeller every once in a while slightly move so I gave her a little spin and it started right up. My filters were idle for probably close to two years. I was actually a little surprised they started up so well.
