I ran a AC110 on my 29 gallon and the current was perfect.
Remember that the output of the filter is spread out almost 10" or so and flows to the surface of the water which will be very turbulant causing the flow to slow down.
The flow velocity from the AC110 compaired to a canister puting out the same GPH will be much much less. SO don't worry. 2 AC110s on a 55 gallon would be perfect.
I would personally go for a canister filter. REason is, you can run small partical filtration without any instant bypass. The AC110 usually has some bypass already from what I have observed on mine and heard. If you want to run small partical filtration though, your best bet would be to get a canister filter.
