did you get a new impeller and shaft?

Sorry everyone! I actually didn't get a new shaft with the impeller assembly. I didn't realize it was not sold together, and I replaced the impeller with no shaft, thus the rattle. Time to get on Amazon and order me one.

That makes sense. :) Glad you were able to figure it out.

did you have to replace the whole motor?

Nope, the filter is in my spare parts bin, as the motor is integrated. Having said that, i just assumed that the problem was the actual motor housing as I had tried a different impeller and it still chattered and the housing looked a bit oval, but I only eyeballed it and since I had a spare filter anyway, into the parts bin it went. I may have been wrong. Anyway, the filter was replaced long ago.

I got my new shaft in on Monday and put everything back together and the noise is gone pretty much. But it still is not as quiet as my other AC70 I have. I'm thinking this one suffered more wear when it sucked up sand a while back from my other cichlids rummaging for food. Oh well, better than nothing.

it will most likely quiet down as the new parts "break in":)

I seen the fish in my tank do that before! They would scoop up sand as if looking for food, float upwards toward the intake and blow it out. Since then, I've taken all the sand out of my tanks.

It has gotten a little more quiet over the last two days. I noticed the sound was also louder with the top cover on so I replaced it with some tin foil to shroud the filter temporarily until I can find a better fix.

I took the filter apart the other day and noticed the shaft was not seated well in the hole in the motor. I tried to tap it in with a small hammer but it still would not seat tightly how it should be, thus causing wobbling of the impeller and the noise. The filter functions fine but just noisier than I'd like it to be. I am definitely staying away from sand substrates from now on!
