Not to hijack the thread but since we're talking about bio rings. I would like to ask does the Brand of bio rings matter? I found some Chinese made bio ring for $3.99 for 16oz. The brand is Filter Masters and this stuffs looks no different than AC Bio Max.

No. The only time you need to replace it is if it breaks down completly. Most filter companys tell you to replace the media every six months, this is only to keep them in business, nothing else. If you have a good coarse sponge for a prefilter media like biomax should realy only require a quick rinse every six months or so. The prefilter is what requires the most maintanace, usually a once a month rinse, or when ever it gets clogged up.

I think this is probably true,but I personally change about 50% of my biomax
a year.Gotta keep the flow

that's fine...I use it whenever I find it. To be brutally honest here...it's all about serface area...the BB don't care what brand the media is... I can fill three or four canisters with the bulk media for the cost of a single box of the "name" brand stuff and never see the slightest differance in preformance.

Ah,,I agree. I just meant that I thought it was a good idea to replace the bio material(or part of it )every 6 to 12 months.No name or brand name ,it doesn't matter.
