AquaClear Change in Sponge Makeup in Recent Years

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yes I have noticed the replacement sponges seem less dense/more open space than the ones that came with the filters 10 years ago. I've also noticed the replacement sponges don't fit the tray as snugly and tend to shrink over a year's worth of use.

I also use Polyfil Traditional batting to help catch the finer particles and take up the empty space in the tray. Of course this requires more frequent cleaning as they plug up quicker which is to be expected.

I also use some Poret 20PPM foam as a replacement for the AC sponge and just cut it to fit the media tray. I've noticed the Poret doesn't shrink over time, collects more fine debris but also requires more frequent cleaning due to the smaller pore size.

I can also tell you that the sponges today do not hold up as long as the previous sponge.

I got the idea from deeda. 20ppm poret foam does a better job than floss + foam. Hate the foam that comes with the ac's and floss is annoying.

I was away from the hobby for a long time and started back around 18 months ago. It's not just the sponges, the HOB Aqua Clears in general are nowhere near the quality they used to be. I used them for years (decades) in the past. Now they are troublesome, flimsy, loud, etc. Nothing like they used to be.

Yep. A lot of long time fish keepers on this forum constantly rave about certain brands/models that they're still using for decades now, just don't get that the newer models are just not built to the same standard and quality of years past.
