If its only HOBs, then two AC 70s and a Fluval U2 internal.
Just out of curiosity, why so many "plugs". Why not just buy one filter that does it all instead of 3 and pay so much electric to run them? It would probably be cheaper(dont hold me to this) to just run and FX5 than 2-70's and a cannister.
And no,I am not suggesting he use an FX5 I am just using it as an example. (about electric used.)
I do know that in regards to flow rate you would get 100 more gph with 2 AC70's than 1 AC110 but it would still be enough for a temporary filter on that 40 that is going to need to be upgraded within a few moths time and then still be used on the new bigger tank that the OP will need anyway.
In any case,as I said before, just keep in mind that in the future you will need to upgrade and get a bigger tank and more filters again if you buy all small filters which is why you should look for a filter that you will be able to use on the bigger tank.

I would run an AC110, because I am always looking towards the future...upgrades! Bigger tanks need bigger filters.
I didn't even see your post until now-totally agree.

I run one Ac50 on my 40b and my water is crystal clear. Dont see the need for three filters of that size on a 40B. Electricity cost too much as it is. If want to and a secondary filter throw a sponge filter in their.

While more plugs may cost more, the overlap acts as a buffer to combat any mistakes i may make. In addition, a single large filter would create far too much flow. So, in the end, I can get the capacity of the large filter, without the flow issues.

However, if the OP is going to upgrade, I wouldn't purchase anything that wouldn't fit into the overall filtration scheme for the large tank.

another vote for the 110. or a rena xp3-4.

i have an ac70 on a (almost overstocked) standard 30g, my params are good so it does its job, but it doesn't move the water around to my liking (dead zones).

As mentioned, an internal is great on a 40 breeder, plus two AC 70s.

I agree....Two AC70's and an internal filter is perfect for a 40 breeder.......Once the biological filtration is setup in the HOB filters, you can rinse out one filter and keep the other running for another month with the full biological stuff in it.........My mind is on the GIANTS game right, pardon my "not so desriptive" reply on the owning two filters, rather than one.......I beleive the AC70 runs for $40-55 each.......The AC101 runs for $60-75.........Buy 2 AC70's.....The current of the AC101 might be a little too much for the 40B.........

I agree that the AC70 is a good size for that tank, but I vote the 110 size because they always reprime after a power flicker.

whereas the AC70's impeller/chamber are small enough that they gum up very quickly such that they don't reprime on their own with out sticking something down into the chamber to give the impeller a 'boost'. unless you clean the impellers very regularly, this is a common problem with all the smaller AC sizes, but not with the big AC110 size.
