Aquaclear is pissing me off!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It's still under warranty, so either return it or contact Hagen

I get all my fish supplies for the most part online because I don't have a "local pet store" near me so I go to petsolutions.com. They have really good prices and usually a good amount of stock. Just go under fish supplies, then replacement parts and it will show aquaclears as the first section. Pick your model and your part. Hope that helps.

Before you start buying & replacign new stuff... make sure you've cleaned it out thoroughly...

If I get sand in my HOB filter, I have to accept this was user error, not filter malfunction. It's shared here daily that we have to keep sand out of HOBs...

But it is inevitable that those of us that use sand will get some caught in our impellers from time to time. Pull out the impeller, stick a turkey baster in the impeller hole and suck/blow/suck/bolow/repeat/etc...

I have Aqua Clear 110s (500s) that are many years old with the original impellers...

Got that right...
I just did something stupid, got sand in a penguin. Scored up the shaft pretty good.
Don`t know about AquaClear, but you can pull the nub off of the end of the impeller shaft on a penguin.
I put the shaft into the chuck of my drill, ran it at low speed while using some fine grit sandpaper to get the grooves out. Then polished the shaft with a scour pad, dabbed with some toothpaste.
Smoothed out quite nice and got the filter quiet again.

Just a quick note on the AC110. If you can't find the original metal replacement shaft for it, you can always use an Eheim 2217 ceramic shaft. It is a bit longer than the AC one but it works great. I have been using the 2217 shafts on both my AC110's for a year now. They are so quiet I can't hear them running.

I have already gone through the turkey baster thing and completely emptied out the filter of sand. I think at one point it just had too much sand in it because even completely cleaned out it still wouldn't run quite smoothly.

Have you looked at your impeller shaft??
If it`s all scored/grooved..it will never run smooth or quiet.
