I agree with not needing carbon for the long term. I cut my sponge in half lengthwise to make more room for the roots of a pothos plant I'm growing. It works, but I have to clean the sponge more often and the AC110 is only secondary filtration for my set up.

I ran 3 AC110s on my 180g. To fit more biomax I cut all 3 sponges to be in half to give me more capacity. Necessary? Maybe not, but I chose to do it and you can do it.

Get poret foam 30ppi at 2 inches deep cut it the same size as the foam pad that came with the filter. That should give you the space. Actually with 2 layers of the poret foam you wont need floss

I cant afford or fit more filters due to the supports on the tank
