i have a juwel vision 260 tank and my external filters are fluval 205 and 304, i could do with more water movement, i have a powerhead ph402 i think by aquaclear, i got it with my second hand set up but i think the previous keeper used it just to move water, can i use the powerhead as some kind of internal filter without using it on an undergravel filter ?

this is for a malawi set up

put a sponge filter on the intake. Instant filter:)

so do these sponge filters just attach to the bottom of the poerhead, do they have any casing to stop the dirt flowing back into the water when the power is switched off.

They will shove over the intake of the powerhead, and they're dense enough to hold dirt if the power fails. A tiny amount might fall off of the side, but nothing significant.

ok thanks ill have a look to see whats avaiable online, will let you know how i get on.:)

after hours of searching i found that you can get an attachment for the aquaclear powerheads that allow you to add foam filter, so £6 delivered off ebay for attachment with foam:headbang2

Here's what I did:

I found a piece of PVC that fit tight into the intake of the powerhead. I cut off about four inches of it and drilled it full of holes. I took an old foam block from an AC 300 HOB. I stabbed it with a fillet knife to make a slit in the middle of it. Shove the tube into the slit and you've got a filter. I also added a second piece of foam to keep it from vibrating against the tank.

I did a larger version using a Rio 2500 and about 14" of 3/4" PVC. I wrapped it in two layers of dual-density filter pad.

Between the two of them they provide all the filtration for my 185 housing a 20" Pangasius.

The best part is that I built them both from stuff in the garage - didn't spend a dime! :)

It is more of a water polisher but I run one in my 125 just to keep it sparkling clean. It's not the main filter by any means but it just helps quite a bit. I have to replace the sleeve about once a month. I did have to use a piece of tubing to make it fit my 402. Why AquaClear makes a quick filter for their powerheads that doesn't fit, I don't know. It does fit the smaller powerheads but not the 402.

This is what I did on both my 75 and 125 :

I keep Africans and I hid powerhead and sponge by building a mountain of rocks on one end of the tank. I really like the set up! I run 2 AC110's in addition to the sponge filter.
